Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
